Wasted good food and drink costs the average UK family almost £60 a month!
Here’s five easy things we can all do to help waste less food and save money:
- Check the date
Make sure you understand the difference between “best before”, “use by” and “sell by” dates. If you’re not going to eat it before its use by date, freeze it. - Plan your meals
Meal planning is a great way to save money on your food bills. Start by checking your fridge, freezer and store cupboard and ask yourself what you really need. Write a list and stick to it. - Store your food correctly
To keep it fresh for longer store fruit and veg in the fridge, potatoes in a cool dark place, and bread in the cupboard or freezer. - Get your portions right
It can be difficult to judge the correct amount of rice, potatoes, and pasta to cook. There are some handy tips to help you work it out, for instance, a mug full of rice will serve four adults. Go to the Love Food, Hate Waste Portion Calculator page for a handy way to work it out. - Love your leftovers
Yesterday’s leftovers could be today’s feast. Make the most of your food, view or download the Recycle Devon “Have Your Food And Eat It” digital recipe book or view the web version here.
