There are many reasons to choose real nappies:

  • Most disposables are made largely of plastic with a super absorbent chemical centre. With real nappies, you can ensure you are putting natural fabrics next to your baby’s skin.
  • Paediatricians agree babies develop stronger hips when kept in the 'frog' postion, washable nappies are regularly recommended for this reason.
  • Modern washables come in great-looking, easy-to-use designs.
  • You can save hundreds of pounds using washable nappies – and that includes the cost of washing.
  • A baby typically goes through 4-6,000 nappy changes! If those nappies are disposable, this creates a serious waste issue. In the UK, 90% of disposables go to landfill where the conditions are no good for biodegrading, even for biodegradable nappies. The larger part of conventional disposables are synthetic and not biodegradable in any case.

 Single use disposable nappies use:

  • 3.5 times more energy
  • 8 times more non-renewable resources
  • 90 times more renewable resources
  • Produce 60 times more solid waste
4500 disposable nappies or 20 cotton nappies ?

Real nappies not only save waste but also use less energy, especially if you follow these top tips:

  1. Wash nappies at 60°C and wraps at 40°C - do not boil wash.
  2. Use A-rated appliances to reduce energy & water consumption.
  3. Minimise tumble drying - line dry or use an airer.
  4. Don't use fabric conditioner - it is unnecessary and it reduces absorbency.
  5. Use eco-friendly washing powders.
  6. Try potty training early around 2 yrs of age.
  7. Use real nappies for more than one child.
  8. Buy second hand nappies, where possible.
  9. Use organic (non-bleached) products.
  10. Don't iron the nappies.
