| Real Nappy Incentives |
The Devon Real Nappy Project offers free information and advice to parents who are interested in finding out about choosing and using real nappies. The main aim of the project is to raise awareness about the alternatives to disposables, so that parents feel able to make an informed choice. Practical and sustainable incentives are available in most areas of Devon, to encourage parents to try real nappies. Financial incentives, such as vouchers and cash back schemes, are not available through the Devon Real Nappy Project. This option was researched in 2005 and results showed that the number of births in Devon each year (approximately 11,000) meant that offering a cash incentive would not be financially viable. Vouchers are intended to equal the cost saving of landfilling disposable nappies. However, there is no guarantee that each family will continue using real nappies, or add to the existing collection, to enable full time use. The trial kits, and ‘Nappies for all’ incentive schemes, were piloted in the North Devon area as an alternative to vouchers and cash back schemes. The trial kit scheme proved successful, with a majority of parents continuing to purchase and use real nappies. The trial kit scheme has expanded to cover most areas of Devon and is expected to grow, as demand increases. |
