Why should I reduce?

The world's natural resources are not limitless.

Modern life places huge demands on our planet, for the materials which are used to make all the things that we take for granted every day.

We cannot continue to use these precious resources inefficiently, or huge problems will be created for future generations to come.

Devon sent approximately 195,000 tonnes of waste to landfill in 2009/10.

In order to meet the government and EU landfill targets, we must increase the recycling and reusing rates, but also reduce the amount of waste we produce. Recycling and reusing alone will not meet these targets.

In this section of the site you will find information to help you reduce the waste you produce, to help make Devon the best performing region in the UK.

The above picture shows the smoldering remains of a plot of deforested land in the Amazon rainforest, Brazil. Annually, it is estimated that net global deforestation accounts for about 2 gigatons of carbon emissions to the atmosphere. Much of this valuable resource is destroyed in order to make space for cattle grazing and the valuable timber, used to produce cheap furniture, which people demand in rich countries.
