What to recycle in Teignbridge

The following materials are collected in the Teignbridge area:

Green Bin

  • FOOD WASTE - any cooked or uncooked food, including vegetable peelings, meat, fish etc
  • GARDEN WASTE - grass/plant/hedge cuttings, small prunings, cut flowers, leaves, weeds etc.

Please do not:
Place any plastic in your green 'compost' bin. Plastic will not compost. If you want to wrap food waste, use newspaper or thin card only. Try placing thin cardboard in the bottom of the bin and avoid very wet material, such as grass cuttings. Alternatively, specially designed 'caddy liners' are available to buy at several outlets. They come in two forms - paper liners and 100% compostable corn starch caddy liners, both approved by Teignbridge District Council.

Green Box

  • CLOUDY PLASTIC MILK BOTTLES - This can also include any other cloudy plastic bottle, such as detergent and fabric conditioner bottles, provided they are marked with the symbol HDPE and a number 2. Please remove the lids, as they are made from a different type of plastic and therefore cannot be recycled with the cloudy plastic bottles. Please wash and squash the bottles, to save space on the lorry.
  • MOBILE PHONES - This includes phone chargers also. Please put these out on dry days only.
  • PRINTER CARTRIDGES - Please only put out empty cartridges. This does not include toners, so we won't be able to collect them.
  • GLASS BOTTLES AND JARS - No broken glass please. Remove lids and please rinse out (used dishwater is the most practical thing to use.)
  • BATTERIES - Please place your used or unwanted batteries in a plastic bag before placing it into your box.  We are unable to collect car or lead acid batteries though this scheme.

Black Box

  • NEWSPAPERS & MAGAZINES - This includes holiday brochures and any directories (including Yellow Pages).
  • PAPER - This includes junk mail, home office paper, clean white paper and plain white envelopes. Please ensure all paper is dry - they can be placed in an untied carrier bag to prevent them from getting wet. Please do not include envelopes with plastic windows, as these cannot be recycled. Ideally, remove the plastic window first, and then place them in your black box.
  • FOOD AND DRINK CANS - Please rinse. Lids can be included. We can also collect cake and biscuit tins, provided all additional packaging has been removed - such as the plastic trays containing the biscuits etc.
  • EMPTY AEROSOLS - Please ensure these are empty, and that the lids have been removed.
